This dataset contains case information occurring among Utah residents for 1)inpatient hospitalized asthma (the 9th revision [ICD-9-493] was used for hospital visits until October 2015; the ICD-10 [J45] was used starting October 1, 2015) cases by primary diagnosis only,
2) inpatient and outpatient asthma emergency department encounters (the 9th revision [ICD-9-493] was used for hospital and emergency department visits until October 2015; the ICD-10 [J45] was used starting October 1, 2015) by primary diagnosis only, and 3) prevalence of asthma.
This dataset is an aggregation by county, five-year age groups, race, ethnicity, sex, year, and month of admission. Asthma hospital discharge data is obtained from the Utah Inpatient Hospitalization Discharge Database and asthma emergency department visit data is obtained through
the Emergency Department Encounter Database. The Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network receives these data through the Office of Health Care Statistics in the Utah Department of Health. Asthma prevalence data is obtained through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System (BRFSS) survey, which is conducted through the Office of Public Health Assessment in the Utah Department of Health. Asthma hospitalization and emergency department visit data was aggregated by the Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network. The asthma prevalence
indicators are maintained and updated by the Utah Asthma Program (UAP).

Asthma hospitalization and emergency department visit data was developed for the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network. The UAP maintains and updates the asthma prevalence datasets. The organization of this data is consistent with the guidance for creating asthma inpatient and outpatient emergency department encounters and asthma prevalence according to the Nationally Consistent Data and Measures (NCDMs).
- Use: These data can be used to understand the distribution and patterns of asthma hospitalization, emergency department visits, and prevalence in the state of Utah.
- DataSources: Asthma hospitalization and emergency department visit data are reported by the Utah Inpatient Hospitalization Discharge Database and the Emergency Department Encounter Database, respectively. Asthma prevalence data is provided through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). In Utah, the BRFSS survey is conducted by the Survey Center in the Office of Public Health Assessment.
- DataLimitations:
Hospitalization data for asthma does not include individuals who do not receive medical care or who are not hospitalized. This includes those who die in emergency rooms, in nursing homes, or at home, and those treated in outpatient settings. Also, the measures are based upon events, not individuals. Therefore, if an individual is admitted multiple times, each admission will be counted separately.

The Office of Health Care Statistics (OHCS) serves as the official repository for UHDD data per the Utah Code Annotated Chapter 33a, Title 26, Utah Administrative Rules R428-10 and R428-11, and a Memorandum of Agreement between the Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (UEPHTN) and the OHCS. The OHCS collects complete, timely, and accurate emergency department case information and disposition data for all hospitalizations occurring in Utah. Before providing annual data updates to the U-EPHTN, the OHCS validates the data quality according to the standards published in the UHDD 2008 Public-Use Data File Users Manual (http://health.utah.gov/hda/manual/PDS2008MAN.I.1.pdf). The U-EPHTP then processes the data according to OHCS aggregation and use requirements before publishing the new dataset.
